Sony QX10 and QX100 lens-style cameras boost your smartphone photos

Sony has formally unveiled the QX10 and QX100 lens-style cameras, designed to partner with your smartphone to boost your mobile photography.
The cool thing is, these lenses (which are essentially mini digital cameras) will work with any smartphone - there is a retractable clip that allows you to put it on the back of any handset - scroll through the gallery above and you'll see one in use on a HTC One. They simply pair with your phone and you use an app to take pictures.
The new accessories are derived from existing Sony cameras, with the more advanced of the pair, the QX100, offering Zeiss glass and a 1-inch sensor, derived from the Cyber-shot RX100 II high-end digital camera. Its price tag looks to be upwards of USD $600, but it promises high-quality results.

The QX100 offers 3.6x optical zoom and will connect to your smartphone via an NFC tap, or through manual set-up if you want to use it with the iPhone. You'll then be able to control it via the Sony PlayMemories Mobile app.
The QX10 offers 10x optical zoom and is more compact, as well as more affordable (in the region of USD $280). It is derived from the Cyber-shot WX200 and gives you a 1/2.3-type 18-megapixel sensor and optical image stabilisation.
Both lens-style cameras contain a battery and microSD card and link to your smartphone via Wi-Fi. An included mount means you can physically connect it to your phone, but it can also be detached and controlled remotely, if you want to grab shots from funny angles. There is also a special case (pictured in the gallery above) which clips the lenses directly onto the new Sony Xperia Z1 smartphone.
Both lens-style cameras will be available from September 2013 and come in black or white.
